MITMondays: 5 artist that should've made the 2017 XXL Freshman List
Last week XXL released the 10th edition of their highly anticipated Freshman List. Being honest, it was trash for a lack of better term. For the artists I wasn't familiar with I waited for their freestyles to drop and even took some time to look them up and I wasn't impressed. For the past couple of years XXL Freshman List has been getting worse and worse. It is lowkey sad how the one time a year people are actually checking for XXL they drop the ball time after time. I must say that Playboi Carti, PNB Rock, Amine, A Boogie With D Hoodie and Kamaiyah do deserve their spots on this list. With that being said, there were some definite snubs this year and I feel obligated to point them out to you guys.
J.I.D. is the latest addition to J. Cole's Dreamville collective. He dropped his debut album The Never Story earlier this year and has been doing big things ever since. I was mainly impressed with his flow and with his lyrics. He's on tour with Cole on the 4 Your Eyez Only so be sure to catch him in a city near you.
I was introduced to Smino when he confront GoldLink over the use of an apparent line he stole from him. I went to check his music out and found out that he was actually dope. Sadly I missed him at Broccoli City but I saw some footage and to see him perform on one leg was pretty dope.
Russ has gained a cult like following over he past 2 years. He embodies the phrase "taking matters into your own hands". Russ produces and mixes all his music. He built his brand from the ground up . His most recent project There's Really A Wolf is a solid project and is on one of my favorite albums of the year so far.
4. Jay IDK
So much could be said for the Baby Scale. Jay IDK is arguably one of the best artist from the DMV area. Last year he dropped his sophomore album via Forbes entitled Empty Bank. Jay has been making moves as of late, touring with Isaiah Rashad and performing on massive festival stages like Rolling Loud. Seeing the progression of Jay IDK is why he should be on the freshamn list. Seeing him perform God Said Trap live will instantly turn you into a fan.
5. Ari Lennox
We round out the list with another member of the Dreamville Collective, Ari Lennox. She is a songstress with a voice that will bless your ears. Last year she released a project entitled PHO and that project still gets some solid plays to this day. She is now on tour alongside J.I.D. supporting J. Cole on his 4 Your Eyez Only Tour this summer so be sure to check her and pretty much the whole Dreamville crew out.
At the end of the day, I don't think XXL could rebound from the lists they have been putting out recently. I now understand why Isaiah Rashad says he didn't want to be a Freshman. I wouldn't want to be associated with some of these "artists" either. It's sad that the XXL Freshman List has now turned into a popularity contest than a recognition for artist who actually deserve it. As Always....
