Last Friday, Lauryn Hill and Nas took over Jiffy Lube Live. It was dope to see the two legends do there thing. For those who don't know Lauryn Hill is a songstress/wordsmith who has two classic albums under her belt, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and The Score which was release under the group The Fugees. Nas has a few classics including Illmatic which is a top 5 album of all time. The two put on a pretty good show but I wasn't too fond of Lauryn's set to be quite honest.
Being that we got there a little bit late we have to park far away from the actual venue. It felt like we were walking forever lol. Once we finally got situated, Nas' set was ending so we essentially saw him walk off stage. I mean we heard his entire set on our pilgrimage to the venue but saw none of it. Soon after, Lauryn Hill comes out to a live band. Her entrance was dope with a subtle walk out and flashing lights. She also had a stage presence that commanded your attention. With that lead up, it would seem like her performance would be dope but it was honestly just average. All of her songs she did at a 1000 mph and you really couldn't enjoy them cause they don't sound like the original. For instance, when she performed How Many Mics, I was confused. The song is a very slow song but she performed it I felt like I was listening to Twista. After a few more tracks Ms. Hill walks off the stage and Nas appears. This was the highlight of my night because I thought I missed him. Seeing Nasty Nas come out to NY State of Mind was dope af. He went theough a few more songs to later be joined by Lauryn Hill to close with If I Rule The World.
Seeing these two legends in the game was definitely something to check off the bucket list. I was a little disappointed because I thought I was going to get MTV Unplugged Lauryn Hill but seeing Nas after I thought I missed him was a big relief. Shout to Cam for taking some great pictures for us and a special thanks to Jiffy Lube Live for letting us cover the event. As Always...
